Tobias Beckett was the veteran thief and gunslinger who took a young Han Solo under his wing, then betrayed him, and taught him the hard way that nobody in the underworld can be trusted. A career criminal working for the Crimson Dawn syndicate in the early years of the Empire, Beckett ran a small crew with his lover Val and the pilot Rio Durant. He was notorious for the death of the bounty hunter Aurra Sing, though he claimed he only pushed her and the fall did the rest. While posing as an Imperial captain during the Mimban campaign, he crossed paths with Solo, first jailing him and then taking him and Chewbacca aboard. The botched coaxium heist on Vandor cost Beckett both Val and Rio. To make up the loss to Dryden Vos, he led a daring raid on the Kessel spice mines aboard the Millennium Falcon. On Savareen he sold out Solo's plan to Vos, then turned on Vos too and tried to take the coaxium for himself. Solo shot him before he could draw. Dying in his protégé's arms, Beckett told him he had finally made the smart move, and admitted that he had meant to go home to Glee Anselm and learn to play the valachord.

Beckett's crew steals a crate from a freight platform in Zarra. Val finds Qi'ra's old logbook inside, and the gang plans to hit a conveyex carrying Crimson Dawn cargo.

Beckett poses as a death priest and steals identichips from Dvorad for Crimson Dawn. Enfys Nest ambushes him on Munt Ontdal, and he blows up the chips and his ship, the Rampart, so the Cloud-Riders can't have them.
10 BBY - Undercover on Mimban
Disguised as an Imperial Army captain, Beckett ends up leading mudtroopers in battle. He has the deserter Han Solo jailed, then takes Solo and Chewbacca aboard a stolen AT-hauler.
10 BBY - Heist on Vandor
The plan to steal coaxium from an Imperial conveyex falls apart when the Cloud-Riders attack. Val and Rio Durant die, the cargo is lost, and Beckett builds grave markers for his fallen crew.
10 BBY - Deal with Dryden Vos
Beckett avoids execution by promising Vos unrefined coaxium from Kessel. As part of the deal, he has to take Qi'ra onto his crew.
10 BBY - Raid on Kessel
Posing as a guard named Tuul, Beckett helps steal coaxium from the Pyke mines. The crew escapes on Lando Calrissian's Millennium Falcon.
10 BBY - Death on Savareen
Beckett tells Vos about Solo's plan to give the coaxium to the Cloud-Riders, then abandons Vos and tries to take the coaxium himself. Solo shoots him, and Beckett dies admitting that Solo made the smart move.
