Maz Kanata is the ancient, goggle-wearing pirate queen whose lakeside castle on Takodana served as a neutral haven for smugglers, pirates and travelling musicians for about a thousand years. Her house had a single rule: no fighting, and no politics. She is Force-sensitive, but she never became a Jedi. Over the centuries she travelled the galaxy collecting relics, trusting the ones that spoke to her through the Force. During the High Republic she took in the infant Qort, who later became a Jedi, and stood beside her friend Sav Malagán when the Nihil attacked Takodana. She kept her abilities hidden during the Empire's reign. Even so, she helped Leia Organa plan her disguise as Boushh to rescue Han Solo, and in the years after Endor she left home again, sensing that the Force was out of balance. At some point she came into possession of Anakin and Luke Skywalker's lightsaber. Thirty years after Endor, she offered it to Rey and pushed her to accept her calling. When the First Order destroyed her castle, she put the saber in Finn's hands instead. Later she pointed Finn and Rose Tico toward a codebreaker on Canto Bight, and in the end she joined the Resistance on Ajan Kloss as an adviser to Leia. She mourned Leia's death and awarded Chewbacca a medal after the victory at Exegol.

Living in an ancient castle beside Nymeve Lake, Maz becomes known as a pirate queen. She gives young smugglers money, gear and contacts and eventually controls more than a thousand ports while the Republic is still young.
~966 BBY - Centuries of Collecting
Maz travels the galaxy for centuries, gathering relics and treasures. She stores them in her castle's vaults and in hidden caches that she logs in her Smuggler's Guide.
~240 BBY - Taking in Qort
Criminals leave a baby Aloxian at her castle. Maz calms him with a vonduun crab skull helmet and asks Jedi Master Sav Malagán for help, and the child, Qort, is taken into the Jedi Order.
232 BBY - Jet Pack Trouble on Tenoo
Maz visits her friend Marlaa Jinara on Tenoo to get her jet pack repaired. The pack malfunctions and flies off, and the youngling Kai Brightstar helps get it back.

Krix Kamerat's Nihil cell attacks Takodana's Jedi Temple. Maz and Sav Malagán watch Qort, freed from his mask, drive the raiders off.

On Ord Mantell, Maz meets her "boyfriend" Chewbacca again and suggests that Leia Organa disguise herself as the bounty hunter Boushh to get into Jabba's palace.

After Endor, Han Solo comes to her castle to meet an Imperial defector with information about Kashyyyk. When Imperial forces follow him, Maz orders him to clean up the mess.
5 ABY - Mercy for Romwell Krass
Maz frees Imperial agent Romwell Krass and a New Republic pilot from her dungeon after their brawl and tells Krass to find peace. Sensing that the Force is out of balance, she sets off to explore the galaxy aboard the Tua-Lu.
9 ABY - Galactic Legend
Maz is now counted among the most famous pirates in the galaxy, and competitors at the Hunters tournament on Vespaara trade stories about her.
34 ABY - Counsel for Rey and Finn
Han Solo brings Rey, Finn and BB-8 to her castle. Maz challenges Finn's urge to run, and when the Skywalker lightsaber calls to Rey, she urges her to take it.
34 ABY - Battle of Takodana
The First Order destroys her castle. Maz gives the lightsaber to Finn, who fights beside Han and Chewbacca until the Resistance arrives.
34 ABY - A Union Dispute
While caught in a firefight, Maz sends Finn and Rose Tico to Canto Bight to find a master codebreaker.
35 ABY - Joining the Resistance
After helping Poe Dameron's Resistance with intelligence, Maz joins them on Ajan Kloss as an adviser. She urges them to find Exegol, is present at Leia's death, and gives Chewbacca the Medal of Bravery after the victory.
