The hidden architect of the early Rebellion, Luthen Rael spent nearly two decades running a secret spy network against the Empire while posing as a refined antiques dealer on Coruscant. Born under the name Lear, he served as an Imperial Army sergeant until he was ordered to take part in a massacre around 18 BBY. Sickened by it, he deserted and took with him a young survivor he named Kleya Marki, who grew up to be his second-in-command. From about 15 BBY he built the web of operatives, informants and financiers that the ISB would come to call "Axis." Mon Mothma's money funded it, he armed Saw Gerrera's Partisans, and he ran a mole, Lonni Jung, inside the ISB itself. In 5 BBY he recruited Cassian Andor from Ferrix and sent him on the Aldhani heist, a raid meant to provoke the Empire into a crackdown that would turn people against it. Rael was ruthless. He let Anto Kreegyr's fighters walk into a trap to protect his source, had Tay Kolma eliminated, and shot Jung once his cover was blown. When Dedra Meero finally identified him in 1 BBY, he stabbed himself rather than be captured. Imperial medics kept him alive for interrogation, but Kleya slipped into the hospital and let him die. Before his fall he had passed Jung's warning about Krennic's secret weapon to the Alliance, and the Rebellion he had sacrificed everything for went on to win without him.

~18 BBY - Massacre and Desertion
Lear, an Imperial Army sergeant from Fondor serving as a swamp trooper, has a crisis of conscience during a massacre. He deserts and takes with him a young survivor he later names Kleya Marki.
~16 BBY - Bombing on Naboo
Now calling himself Luthen Rael, he stages one of his first attacks, bombing an Imperial convoy on Naboo. Kleya is with him, but at the last moment he presses the detonator himself.
15 BBY - Foundations of a Movement
Rael starts building a counter-Imperial movement, knowing it will cost him any ordinary life.
~10 BBY - Galactic Antiquities
He opens Galactic Antiquities and Objects of Interest on Coruscant as a cover. The gallery gives him access to the elite, and he cultivates allies such as Mon Mothma, Saw Gerrera and the ISB mole Lonni Jung.
5 BBY - Recruiting Cassian Andor
Rael goes to Ferrix to buy a stolen Starpath unit and instead recruits Cassian Andor. The two fight their way past Preox-Morlana security to escape.
5 BBY - The Aldhani Heist
He places Andor on Vel Sartha's team, which robs the Aldhani Garrison of a sector's payroll. Afterward he tells Mon Mothma the point was to provoke the Empire into cracking down harder.
5 BBY - The Spellhaus Sacrifice
Jung warns him that the ISB has set a trap for Anto Kreegyr's attack on Spellhaus. Rael refuses to let Jung quit, persuades Saw Gerrera to let Kreegyr's group be wiped out so the mole stays hidden, and escapes an Imperial Arrestor cruiser on the way out.
5 BBY - Ferrix Uprising
He returns to Ferrix intending to kill Andor at Maarva Andor's funeral. Instead, after the riot, he accepts Andor into the rebellion.
4 BBY - Mothma Family Wedding
Rael attends Leida Mothma's wedding on Chandrila as the curator of a gift. While there he has Cinta Kaz eliminate Tay Kolma, who had become a security risk.
3 BBY - Ghorman Intrigue
Rael sends Andor to assess the Ghorman Front. When Andor turns the job down, Rael sends Vel Sartha and Cinta Kaz in his place. With Kleya's help he also removes the listening device from Davo Sculdun's collection during the Senate Investiture party.
2 BBY - Ghorman Massacre and Mothma's Escape
Rael sends Andor to kill Dedra Meero on Ghorman, but the attempt fails amid the massacre. He then warns Mothma that Bail Organa's extraction team has been compromised and arranges for Andor to get her off Coruscant.
1 BBY - Killing Lonni Jung
Jung tells him about Krennic's secret weapon project and Galen Erso. Rael then shoots Jung and passes the intelligence to Kleya to send on to the Alliance.
1 BBY - Death on Coruscant
Cornered by Dedra Meero in his gallery, Rael stabs himself. Imperial medics keep him alive at Lina Soh Hospital, but Kleya infiltrates the building and disconnects his life support, and he dies.
